Instructions for Your Colonoscopy

Please read all prep instructions at least (3) days before your colonoscopy examination. Your dosage schedule may be adjusted by your physician.

You will need to purchase a total of (3) fluid ounces of Fleet Phospho-Soda (Ginger-Lemon Flavor or Unflavored) at the pharmacy to be taken in divided doses.

  • DO NOT ACCEPT SUBSTITUTIONS for Fleet Phospho-Soda brand
  • If larger amount is purchased, DO NOT EXCEED the recommended dosage given in these instructions as serious side effects may occur.

Note: Individual responses to laxatives vary. This prep will cause multiple bowel movements. It often works within 30 minutes of taking and may last as long as 3 hours. Please remain within easy access of toilet facilities.

  • If you require antibiotics before routine dental work, or a diabetic taking insulin or pills, or taking a blood thinner, or have cardiac stents, consult your physician for additional instructions before beginning this procedure.

Make sure you have made arrangements for someone to drive you home after the procedure. Because of the sedation you will receive, you will not be able to drive yourself home, or drive for the remainder of the day. Please make arrangements in advance for your transportation home. YOU CANNOT HAVE THE PROCEDURE DONE IF NO RIDE IS AVAILABLE. Taxicabs and public transportation are not acceptable options.

DAY BEFORE EXAMINATION:
Drink only "clear liquids" for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Solid foods, milk, or milk products are not allowed. Liquids that are colored red or purple are not allowed. *No Alcoholic Beverages*

"CLEAR LIQUIDS" include:

  • strained fruit juices without pulp (apple, white grape, lemonade)
  • water
  • clear broth or bouillon
  • coffee or tea (without milk or non-dairy creamer)
  • gatorade
  • carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks
  • Kool-aid or other fruit flavored drinks
  • plain Jell-O (without fruits or toppings)
  • ice popsicles

7:00 p.m.
Add 1 1/2 fluid oz (3 measuring Tablespoonfuls-not tableware) Fleet Phospho-Soda to one-half glass (4 fluid ounces) of cool water, (or you may substitute water with gatorade, ginger ale, apple juice, sprite or 7-up) and drink. Make sure you drink it all. Follow with continuous approved clear liquids. You are encouraged to drink throughout the night to avoid dehydration.

DAY OF EXAMINATION:
* (4) hours before you leave for your appointment (Allow driving time)
Add 1 1 /2 fluid oz (3 measuring Tablespoonfuls-not tableware) Fleet Phospho-Soda to one-half glass (4 fluid ounces) of cold water, (or you may substitute water with gatorade,ginger ale, apple juice, sprite or 7-up) and drink. Make sure you drink it all. Follow immediately with fluids. Continue to drink until (3) hours before the test to avoid dehydration.
